Day 2. Detours, hills and X-wing pilots

So, after a indifferent start to the trip on day one I couldn't help feel inspired as I stepped out of my room on day two to see an X-wing pilot and General Madine stroll past me in the corridor. Some may say that there was a Star Wars convention in the area but I like to think they had just got lost somewhere outside Mos Eisley space station and ended up at the Super8 motel in Ferndale.

The inspiration didn't last long though.. schoolboy error number 3 was to ask directions from a motel cleaner. She sent me the wrong way. 6 miles later and I was back where I started. Still, what's 6 miles in 1600 eh?!  Oh, and that was only after I had discovered I left my guidebook somewhere yesterday in all the rearranging. Along with my reading book as well. Twit. Saves on weight I suppose.

It started to drizzle again just as I got back to my starting point after the morning detour. At that point I was expecting another wet day, although fortunately it abated after about an hour and I had a fairly dry run from there. Today was quite hilly. I followed the I-5 for a few miles (although not actually on it) and got through Bellingham without much of a problem. After that it was onto Bow, Edison and finally ending up in Oak Harbour. A nasty little headwind slowed me down near Edison, after that it was just the endless rolling hills I had to worry about. 62.5 miles on the speedo (including initial detour) so keeping above my original average expectation of 50 miles a day, but the route has changed dramatically from the original plan as all I have to follow now is my America Cycling Association map.. it's a good map, although takes me on a completely different route until I reach Olympia.
