Day 15. Eureka!

No, I haven't just discovered a new way of calculating density.. but I have reached Eureka! Although the weatherman had stipulated that it would rain all day, fortunately, for the umpteenth time this trip, he was wrong!

I awoke to a beautiful sunny, if a little cold, morning. Bouyed by the fact that it wasn't a horrid grey day I leapt at the chance to cycle in the sun and made good headway out of Klamath. The double bonus of today was that the cycle route took me around the big hill in between Klamath and Eureka, rather than straight over it, so I was happy to deviate from the 101 just to save my tired legs another long climb. I've become a litttle desensitized to the scenery now in my eagerness to get from a to b,  but once again it was beautiful, and coming into Eureka there were quite a number of nice beaches and bays to look at.

The weather couldn't hold out all day, of course, that would just be crazy! I was caught in a sudden onslaught when the heavens opened, but as I wasn't far from my destination and it only lasted about 10 minutes I can't complain. I made good time to Eureka and admittedly now am absolutely zonked. 61.60 on the speedo. Fatigue has set in over the last couple of days and I am in need of a proper rest before the next few legs of the journey take me into San Francisco. Eureka does not seem like a particularly nice town, but it will do for a couple of days whilst I build up my strength again and head down to San Francisco, which is about 280 miles away, if I go the straight way, or 300 or so if I go the costal route. That's a decision for Tuesday I think when I have checked the maps, but for now I am going to kick back and hope my legs recover sufficiently to take me over the next set of hills!

Also, a quick thanks to all those who have sponsored me - we're over the £1000 pound mark so thank you very much!

  1. Awesome blog as always Wez. And great job with the cycling and with the money raised. The more I read the more jealous I get... even though I'm sure the uphill battles in the rain aren't as much fun as you make them sound. ;)
