The dangers ahead.. or the weather to be exact!

It's been an interesting day in Vancouver - looking out of the window of my apartment at the unceasing rain and greyness. It makes me think that the most important aspect of this ride is not so much the physical side of things, but much more so the mental side of cycling in unpredictable weather for 5 weeks.

Being that I am English I'm quite used to horrible, cold, drenching rain. I have cycled many times in such conditions, although usually have a nice hot bath awaiting at the end of each ride. Since I have been in Vancouver I have had a hot tub and steam room at my disposal, which is an unbelievable luxury after a long ride. I've a feeling that cycling all day then setting up camp and sleeping on a mat for several nights on end will be a challenge in itself. The good thing regarding the weather is I should have the wind pushing me along for most of the journey, rather than being in my face the whole time.

Fitness training is going well, after spending 4 days a week in the gym and cycling every other day for the last few months I feel confident that this will set me in good sted for what lies ahead. Thanks to Mark Beaumont for raising awareness of my ride http://twitter.com/MrMarkBeaumont although for some reason he said I'm going to Florida :) still, same same but different!

Thanks to all those that have sponsored me already - keep it coming, no matter how little or how much every penny counts

  1. I did this route last year and it was really amazing! The weather can certainly be a challenge but the prevailing tail wind is great!

The American Cycling Association maps are great and I'd highly recomend them. You've probably seen what I've said on my website so other than that then just enjoy!
